PRP at AARVA
Your own blood, prepared and used for your skin or scalp, with an honest view of what it can and cannot do
About PRP
PRP, or platelet-rich plasma, is a regenerative treatment made from a small sample of your own blood. The blood is spun in a centrifuge to separate out the plasma and concentrate the platelets, which carry growth factors involved in repair. That plasma is then placed back into the skin or scalp by fine injections or with microneedling. It is used to support thinning hair, acne scars, tired, crepey skin under the eyes and overall skin quality. The evidence is mixed, especially for hair, and we will be straight with you about that.
PRP at Aarva is planned by Dr Shivani Malhotra, a practising GP who leads our skin and regenerative medicine, and delivered in our practice on Midland Drive, Royal Sutton Coldfield. Because we are GPs, we look for the reasons behind thinning hair or tired skin first, from iron and thyroid levels to hormones and medicines, and can arrange blood tests where they are needed. You leave your consultation with a written treatment plan with clear pricing.
“PRP uses your own blood, which appeals to people who want to keep things natural. I am honest that results vary, and I will tell you what is realistic for you.”
Is PRP Right for You?
Likely a good fit if you:
- have early pattern hair thinning, or tired, thinning skin on the face or under the eyes
- would like a treatment made from your own blood rather than a product
- understand that results vary and build slowly over a course
Probably not the right first step if you:
- have sudden, patchy or unexplained hair loss, which needs a medical assessment first
- have a blood or platelet disorder, take medicines that thin the blood, or have an active infection or cancer
- want a quick or predictable change, where another option may suit you better
Not sure which side you are on? That is exactly what the consultation is for.

- Your consultation is time with a doctor, set aside just for you.
From First Conversation to Follow-Up
Four simple steps, with the same doctor-led care from your first message to your follow-up.
Tell us what is bothering you
Request an appointment online or get in touch, and let us know whether it is your hair, your skin or both.
See a doctor from the start
A GP takes your full history, examines your skin or scalp and, for hair loss, looks for a medical cause first. You leave with a written treatment plan with clear pricing.
Your treatment
A small blood sample is taken from your arm and spun to prepare the plasma while the area is numbed. The plasma is then injected or microneedled into the skin or scalp. It takes 45 to 75 minutes in all.
We follow you up
Written aftercare and a named person to call. Sessions are usually four weeks apart, and we review you against your starting photographs at each one and again at three to six months.
Why a Doctor Plans Your PRP
PRP at Aarva is planned by Dr Shivani Malhotra, GP, who leads skin and regenerative medicine. Every treatment is planned and overseen by a doctor.
For the face, PRP can be injected in tiny amounts across the skin, used carefully under the eyes, or applied straight after microneedling. It can improve skin quality and texture for some people, and it sits well within a wider plan for acne scarring. For hair and scalp, PRP is injected across the thinning areas. The research on hair is genuinely mixed, and not everyone responds. Hair loss can also come from low iron, thyroid problems, hormonal changes, stress or illness, and treating the cause matters more than any injection. Where appropriate, we can also discuss prescription treatments for hair, after consultation.
PRP often works as one part of a plan. Dermapen microneedling helps it reach the skin or scalp evenly. For skin quality and the under-eyes, polynucleotides, Profhilo or Sunekos may give a more predictable result, and we will tell you which we would choose for you.

Questions Patients Ask About PRP
Cannot see your question? Our doctors are happy to talk it through at your consultation.
Platelets in your blood release growth factors that help tissue repair. PRP concentrates those platelets in a small amount of plasma, which is placed into the skin or scalp. The aim is to support collagen production in the skin and, on the scalp, the growth phase of hair follicles that are thinning but still active.
PRP is used for early pattern hair thinning, dull or tired skin, fine crepey skin under the eyes, and acne scarring, usually alongside microneedling. It cannot regrow hair where follicles have stopped working, and it is not a filler, so it does not replace lost volume.
The evidence is mixed. Some trials in pattern hair thinning show a modest increase in hair density, while others show little benefit, and methods vary a lot between studies. It tends to do more in early thinning and when combined with other treatment. We will not recommend it if we do not think it will help you.
It can suit people with early thinning or tired skin who want a gradual change using their own blood. It is not suitable with a blood or platelet disorder, low platelets, an active infection or cancer, or during pregnancy. If you take medicines that thin the blood or anti-inflammatories, we discuss timing at consultation.
Redness, swelling, tenderness and small bruises at the injection points are common and usually settle in one to three days. Under the eyes, bruising can take a little longer to fade. Less commonly, there can be a headache or scalp tenderness after hair treatment. Infection is rare. Because PRP comes from your own blood, allergic reactions to it are very unlikely.
Having blood taken feels like any routine blood test. On the face, numbing cream takes the edge off and most people find it tolerable. The scalp is more sensitive, so we numb it and work slowly to keep it as comfortable as we can.
Most people are back at work the following day, although under-eye bruising may need a little concealer. Expect one to three days of redness or small bumps, and possible bruising. After hair treatment, avoid washing your hair for the rest of the day. Avoid exercise, saunas and alcohol for 24 hours.
Usually three to four sessions about four weeks apart. For hair, results need maintenance, often every four to six months. For skin, many people have a top-up once or twice a year.
Skin can look fresher within a few weeks. Hair changes are slower, and we usually review at three to six months against your starting photographs, as hair grows in cycles.
PRP is made from your own blood, so it varies from person to person. Polynucleotides are a prepared medical device, so each treatment is consistent. Both aim to improve skin quality, and the evidence for each is still developing. Some plans use one, some use both.
PRP is available at Aarva on Midland Drive, Royal Sutton Coldfield, a short drive from Four Oaks, Walmley, Erdington, Lichfield, Tamworth and north Birmingham. Parking is available nearby.
PRP at Aarva is priced individually, with course pricing where it helps. Any blood tests we recommend before hair treatment are priced separately. All of this is set out in your written plan before you decide. PRP also earns points in the Aarva Circle.
