About Anti-Wrinkle Injections

Treatment for lines and wrinkles at Aarva starts with a consultation, not a needle. Lines on the forehead, between the brows and around the eyes are often made by the muscles we use to frown, smile and raise our eyebrows, and over time they can stay visible when the face is at rest. Other fine lines and wrinkles come from changes in the skin itself, sun damage or lost volume, and lines on the neck have causes of their own. Each needs something different, so we find out which lines you have before anything is suggested.

Your consultation is with Dr Shivani Malhotra, a practising GP who leads our skin and regenerative medicine, at our practice on Midland Drive, Royal Sutton Coldfield. Some treatments for expression lines use a prescription-only medicine. That can only be prescribed after a face-to-face consultation with a prescriber who has examined you and taken your medical history, and it is never the only option we discuss. You leave your consultation with a written treatment plan with clear pricing.

“The compliment I want my patients to get is that they look well, not that they have had something done. That usually means using less, not more.”

Is Anti-Wrinkle Treatment Right for You?

Likely a good fit if you:

  • have frown lines, forehead lines or crow’s feet that bother you
  • notice lines that show when your face moves and are starting to stay at rest
  • want a doctor to explain every option, including those that do not involve injections

Probably not the right first step if you:

  • are pregnant, breastfeeding or trying for a baby
  • have deeper folds from lost volume, where dermal fillers may do more
  • mainly have thin, crepey or sun-damaged skin, where Profhilo, laser or skincare may be the better start

Not sure which side you are on? That is exactly what the consultation is for.

Your journey

From First Conversation to Follow-Up

Four simple steps, with the same doctor-led care from your first message to your follow-up.

01

Tell us what is bothering you

Request an appointment online or ring us. A line about which lines bother you is plenty, or you can save it for the room.

02

See a doctor from the start

A GP takes your history, including any medicines and conditions, looks at your face at rest and as it moves, and explains every option for your lines, with and without needles, then gives you a written treatment plan with clear pricing.

03

Your treatment

If a prescription-only treatment is part of your plan, it is only prescribed after that face-to-face assessment, and only once you have had time to consider it. If your plan points to skincare, laser or a skin booster instead, that is what we book.

04

We follow you up

You go home with written aftercare and the name of the person to call. We see you again at two weeks to compare with your starting photographs and check how you have responded.

Why a Doctor Plans Your Anti-Wrinkle Treatment

Treatment for lines and wrinkles at Aarva is planned by Dr Shivani Malhotra, GP, who leads skin and regenerative medicine. Every treatment is planned and overseen by a doctor.

Faces are not a template. The same frown line can come from a strong muscle, thin skin or a heavy brow, and treating the wrong cause can leave someone looking tired or surprised rather than rested. Because we are GPs as well as skin doctors, we also look at what affects treatment and healing, from the medicines you take and plans for pregnancy to conditions that affect the muscles or nerves. The aim is a face that still moves and still looks like you.

Lines are rarely one problem. Expression lines often sit alongside dull or thinning skin, so a plan may combine treatment for lines with Profhilo for hydration and skin quality, polynucleotides for thin skin around the eyes, LaserMe for fine lines and texture, or dermal fillers where lost volume is deepening a fold. Medical-grade skincare, with prescription creams where appropriate, after consultation, sits underneath most plans.

FAQs

Questions Patients Ask About Anti-Wrinkle Treatment

Cannot see your question? Our doctors are happy to talk it through at your consultation.

It starts with a consultation. A doctor looks at your lines while your face is moving and at rest, and works out whether they come from muscle movement, skin quality, sun damage or lost volume. Lines from muscle movement can be treated with a prescription-only medicine, which can only be prescribed after that face-to-face assessment. Lines from changes in the skin usually respond better to skincare, laser or a skin booster.

The consultation covers frown lines between the brows, horizontal forehead lines, crow’s feet around the eyes, bands and lines on the neck, and finer lines across the face. Which option suits each one depends on what is causing it, and some areas are better treated in other ways.

Treatment for expression lines can suit adults with lines they find bothersome. We do not offer it during pregnancy or breastfeeding, over an infection, or to people with certain nerve and muscle conditions, such as myasthenia gravis. We also ask about the medicines you take and any previous treatments. Your consultation confirms what is right for you, and sometimes the answer is to start with your skin.

It depends on the treatment in your plan. Any treatment with a needle can cause redness, small bumps, tenderness and bruising where it goes in. A headache is sometimes reported. Less commonly, a brow or eyelid can feel heavy or droop, which is usually temporary. Before you consent, the prescriber talks you through the risks that apply to you, in person.

We take your medical history, including medicines, allergies and any previous treatments. The doctor examines your face at rest and while you frown, smile and raise your brows, takes photographs, and talks through what you would like to change. At the end you have a written treatment plan with clear pricing, to consider before you decide.

Injections for expression lines use a very fine needle, and people usually describe a brief scratch at each point. Numbing is rarely needed. If your plan includes laser or a skin booster, we explain how those feel at your consultation.

Small marks and redness from the needle tend to fade within an hour or so, and most people return to work the same day. For the rest of that day we ask you not to rub the area, lie flat or do strenuous exercise. The details are in your written aftercare.

Treatment for expression lines is not a one-off, and any effect fades with time. How often it is repeated varies from person to person, and the prescriber discusses it with you at your review. Nothing is rebooked unless you ask for it.

It varies from person to person, and any change is gradual. Your review, at around two weeks, is where the doctor checks how you have responded and whether anything needs adjusting.

They do different jobs. Treatment for expression lines works on lines caused by muscle movement. Dermal fillers add volume, for example where the cheeks have flattened or a fold has deepened. Many faces have a bit of both, which is why a doctor looks at the cause first.

Sometimes. Vertical bands on the neck can come from muscle, while horizontal lines and crepey skin usually come from the skin itself. Depending on the cause, we may suggest treatment for the muscle, a skin booster, radiofrequency or laser, and we explain which, and why, at your consultation.

We see patients about lines and wrinkles at our practice on Midland Drive, Royal Sutton Coldfield, which is easy to reach from Four Oaks, Walmley, Erdington, Lichfield, Tamworth and north Birmingham. Parking is available nearby.

The price of anti-wrinkle treatment at Aarva is set at your consultation. It depends on your plan, and you receive it in writing at the consultation, before you agree to anything.

Come With the Problem, Not the Treatment

You do not need to know whether an injection is the answer. Tell a doctor what is bothering you about your lines, and you will leave with an honest view of what will help, and what will not.
